Dorking Football Ground Update
The work to complete the range of exciting community facilities at the new development in Meadowbank Park has taken slightly longer than anticipated, and for good reason, before its doors open for the first time. The completed facilities will be a fantastic asset not only to the district, but the whole of Surrey, and it will be well worth the wait.
December will mark the completion of the external building work and the focus will immediately then turn to fitting-out the facility. Once the necessary Health & Safety checks have been completed, the anticipated opening date is at the end of January. Residents, visitors and local junior clubs can look forward to taking advantage of a 3G pitch, floodlights, stands, clubhouse, changing room, new headquarters for Surrey FA, new home for Dorking Wanderers FC, soft play, café facilities and public toilets.
Councillor Charles Yarwood, Executive Member for Assets and Investment, said: "Whilst the on-site contractors have continued to make every effort to keep the development on schedule, the impact of various unforeseen ground conditions could not have been anticipated. The comprehensive work necessary to resolve them has taken longer than expected. I would like to stress though that we are relieved and thankful to have discovered these issues which, if left unchecked, could have exposed the facility to a number of risks in years to come. The duty of care and commitment to the safety of all users of this facility is MVDC's and our partners' highest priority. Doing nothing was not an option and the removal of various waste materials and work to raise the entire site to remove the risk the natural spring posed to future flooding has extended the duration of the work. The time and care taken to safeguard the development has ensured that future generations will be able to enjoy the facilities for decades to come."
Caroline McRoyall, Chief Executive of Surrey County Football Association, said: "Mole Valley District Council has kept us informed of progress on site and whilst the delay causes us complications, it is imperative that the site is safeguarded for the long-term future of football in Surrey".
Marc White, Chairman of Dorking Wanderers, said: ""Following discussions with Mole Valley District Council and Surrey FA, I can confirm that contingencies have been agreed ensuring the short extra delay presents no threat either to our ability to fulfil current fixtures, or to our continued place in the Bostik Premier Division.
"It's an exciting development and, naturally, we want to move in as soon as possible. But it's a short delay and Dorking Wanderers fully supports the Council's desire to build the stadium to the highest possible standards. Come January, the community will have a fantastic facility for generations to come."
