Car Parking Charges - Statement from Councillor Michael
Councillor Vivienne Michael, Leader of Mole Valley District Council, said: "Mole Valley District Council's (MVDC) hourly car parking charge has been frozen for nine years and, at 60p, is the lowest in Surrey. As a result Council Tax is now subsidising the cost of our transport-related services to the tune of £1.25m every year. This is simply unsustainable and threatens our ability to maintain other front line services."The new charges would come in in August 2018 and would remain at this level at least for the duration of our three-year forward plan. They will enable us to increase the number of free parking spaces we can offer and also make a further £120,000 capital investment in improving our car parks. This will include refurbishment of the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall car park, installation of electric vehicle charging bays and upgrading pay and display machines.
"MVDC's Scrutiny Committee will be debating the 2018/19 budget proposals on 23 January and the Executive will be listening carefully to that debate as well as to the views of local businesses and other interested parties before finalising our budget recommendations on 6 February. These will go forward to a full Council meeting on 20 February."
