Leatherhead Duck Race Update
In July, organisers made the difficult decision to postpone the popular Leatherhead Duck Race due to unprecedented low water levels, which meant the ducks could not 'race' along the River Mole as normal. Despite every effort being made to find an alternative date in September, regrettably this has not been possible and this year's race has had to be cancelled.Duck lovers need not despair though, although the Duck Race will no longer be taking place, 'River Mole Discovery Day' on Sunday 30th September will feature sponsored ducks as part of a raffle, with a number of prizes kindly donated by local businesses up for grabs. Ducks are still available to sponsor in advance from the Swan Centre (on selected days) and Barton's Bookshop in Leatherhead. The winner of the Duck Trail will also be announced at the event.
'River Mole Discovery Day' is a popular, free annual event held within the grounds of the Leatherhead Leisure Centre on the banks of the River Mole. This year's event, which takes place from 12 noon to 4pm, marks World Rivers Day.
Councillor Vivienne Michael, Leader of Mole Valley District Council, said: "It is disappointing that the Duck Race cannot be rescheduled but it was important that all partners were able to be involved to ensure a safe and fun-filled day. River Mole Discovery Day is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the importance to wildlife and recreation, and to meet the people who work to improve it. This is an event for the whole family, so I hope people will come along, picnic, and take part in activities which will help explain the importance of the river."
