Latest on Leatherhead & Fetcham flood alleviation plan
One of Transform Leatherhead's key partners, the Environment Agency, gave a recent update to Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) Members on its latest plans for flood alleviation for Leatherhead and Fetcham and will be hosting a public Flood Awareness Event about it on February 28th at the Leatherhead Institute.
Councillor Simon Edge, Cabinet Member for Prosperity, said "It is important to our delivery of the Transform Leatherhead Riverside Quarter schemes of Claire House and James House, and the Riverside Park that we work closely with the Environment Agency and partners as they explore flood alleviation measures for Leatherhead and Fetcham.
"At the May 2018 Transform Leatherhead Forum the Environment Agency presented a short list of options and explained the challenges present due to surface water in the Fetcham area. At their January 2019 presentation to Members they explained that further investigation had proven there was no single technical solution that would prevent flooding from both river and surface water. The Environment Agency therefore proposes a preferred short term protection option of 'property level resistance and resilience' - this means a range of individual measures to protect the homes most at risk. The Environment Agency will, however, also continue to work to find long-term solutions. MVDC will continue to support the Environment Agency, and Surrey County Council as the lead flood authority, in doing that.
"Please put the Flood Awareness Day on 28th February 2pm - 8pm at the Leatherhead Institute in your diary, to find out more and discuss the plans in detail with the Environment Agency. The exhibition material will also be made available through the Transform Leatherhead website from the 28th of February at www.molevalley.gov.uk/floodawarenessevent"
