Training Session Attendance Soars Ahead of Games

With the countdown to this year's Specsavers Surrey Youth Games well and truly on, the levels of participation and enthusiasm displayed in the free multi-sport training sessions held in Mole Valley in recent months has been overwhelmingly high.

With attendance up 14% on last year, young people aged between 6 and 16 years old have been taking advantage of the opportunity to receive up to seven weeks free coaching in a range of sports at sessions held across the district since April. There was a wide range of sports to choose from, with many participants wanting to try a sport they had not participated in before.

The Games place a strong emphasis on inclusivity and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, exemplified this year by the introduction of 'Couch to 2k' which is aimed at encouraging young people who do not play a sport to take part in a 2km run on event weekend.

Whilst only a certain number of young people can go on to represent Team Mole Valley at the Games at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June, the physical and social benefits of taking part in training sessions led by experienced sports coaches are far-reaching.

Councillor David Draper, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: "We are delighted with the high level of interest in the Games this year and the impressive number of young people who have been involved in training sessions in Mole Valley this past month. The social and physical benefits of taking part in a wide range of sports cannot be underestimated, regardless whether they go on to represent Team Mole Valley at the competition weekend.

"The levels of enjoyment and enthusiasm displayed not only by the participants themselves but our wonderful group of coaches is contagious, and everyone involved can be rightly proud of their progress since the first sessions began."
