Return to the Committee System of Decision Making

At Mole Valley District Council's (MVDC) extraordinary council meeting on Tuesday 18 June, the cabinet agreed to return to the committee system of decision making.

MVDC currently operates a cabinet model of governance, which comprises a leader, deputy leader and seven lead members.

The new committee system will return powers which are currently the responsibility of the cabinet to committees, which are made up of councillors in proportion to their parties' representation on the Council.

Councillor Stephen Cooksey, Leader of Mole Valley District Council, said: "We see this new structure as transparent and democratic. All members' voices will be heard, and all members will be accountable for Council decisions. We feel strongly that this is the right move for MVDC and its residents."

A cabinet working group will be formed to put together an appropriate committee structure and recommend terms of reference, composition and mode of operation for each committee.

The new structure will then be submitted to the Council for approval with a view to it taking effect from the annual meeting of the Council in May 2020.
