Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) has joined a nationwide scheme, which allows you to choose where to eat and shop for food, and supports Surrey County Council Trading Standards Eat Out Eat Well Scheme.
The Scores on the Doors Food Hygiene Rating System gives you more information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, hotels, and many other places. The scheme gives each business a hygiene rating when it is inspected by MVDC.
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme allows customers to make informed decisions about where they choose to eat out in Mole Valley.
How does it work?
Food Hygiene Ratings are determined at routine inspections carried out by MVDC Environmental Health Officers. The hygiene standards found on these inspections are rated to show how closely the business is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law.
At the inspection, checks will be made on:
- how hygienically the food is handled - how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
- the condition of the structure of the buildings - the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
- how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe
At the end of the inspection, the business is given one of the six ratings:
- 5 = very good
- 4 = good
- 3 = generally satisfactory
- 2 = improvement necessary
- 1 = major improvement necessary
- 0 = urgent improvement necessary
When you eat out or shop for food, you might see a sticker in the window, on the door or a certificate on display, showing you the hygiene rating for that business. Businesses are encouraged to display these stickers and certificates at their premises in a place where you can easily see them when you visit. New food businesses are displayed as 'awaiting inspection' until such time that they receive a food hygiene inspection and their rating is determined.
If you're planning to eat out or buy food, you can search the Food Hygiene Ratings website to find out scores for premises in your area.
Eat Out Eat Well
The Eat Out Eat Well Award has been developed to reward caterers throughout Surrey who make it easier for their customers to make healthy choices when eating out, symbolised by an apple logo in the shape of a heart. It has three levels:
The level of award is based on a scoring system that takes into account the type of food on offer, cooking methods, and how the meals are promoted to customers. This scheme benefits both caterers by promoting their businesses and consumers by helping them make healthier choices when eating out.
